Adventure camp is El Refugio’s traditional youth summer camp. 2012 was the first year we held camp. Since then, we have expanded to two weeks of adventure camp.
We hold adventure camp in the month of August. Adventure camp is designed for 12-16 year olds and operates as a traditional week-long overnight youth camp. Though very common in the US, this model of camp is not the norm here in Ecuador. In spite of that fact, we’ve had great success in filling our adventure camp weeks and hope to continue seeing growth in numbers and more lives impacted. We find that combining our team-building based adventure programming with a speaker, music, and games has a deep impact on the youth who attend. We see adventure camp as an incredible opportunity to engage with Ecuadorian youth and share the love of Christ in an impacting way.
Adventure camp lasts for six days. These days are comprised of the following basic elements:
- Sessions and times of worship
- Outdoor adventure challenges
- Free time for relational interaction
- Traditional outdoor recreational games
- Personal times of reflection
- Guided Bible study/cabin times
The concept of adventure camp is to mix traditional camp methodology with experiential/adventure education. Our camp model specifically has a key focus on leadership development with the purpose of exposing more youth to nature and outdoor adventure. At the same time, we are providing an opportunity to attend a week of well-planned, intentional programming that’s open and available to anyone, without needing to organize or bring your own group. Adventure camp is open to any and all youth between ages 12 and 17 and is a quality, deeply impacting week to experience.
