Twice a year we have young adults from all around Latin America who come to join us as part of our Alturas internship. Alturas interns spend 10 – 12 weeks at El Refugio and are led to develop their character, discover their personal potential, and pursue God’s calling in their lives. We guide this through service opportunities, spiritual disciplines practiced in nature, and our adventure programming.

The ultimate goal of Alturas is to train, empower, and raise up leaders around Latin America who have a passion for their faith and are actively pursuing and living out God’s calling in their lives. We see this being directly connected to Romans 12:2-3 which says:

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.”

Our Alturas interns live in community in the house on the hill, which we refer to as the discipleship house. They serve alongside our staff in all of the different areas of our ministry. They meet on a weekly basis with one of our staff members for a time of mentoring. They practice spiritual disciplines, have times of Bible study, formal classes with our staff, and memorize passages of scripture. Part of the internship is also to integrate into our ministry, which oftentimes means they will help facilitate groups who are with us for retreats. They also have the opportunity to be a part of a minimum of one off-site missions experience, joining in the work taking place with one of our ministry partners. We aim to model and live out the attitude of Christ, which is referred to in Philippians 2:5-8:

Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in theform of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,  but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

Some of these include: Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Jesus, Peter & Andrew, and Paul.

We have been greatly blessed to see the lasting fruit which has taken place in the lives of many of our past Alturas interns. Many have taken on stronger leadership roles in their churches, started their own ministries, or changed so drastically that all of those around them comment on the growth that has taken place in their lives. We praise God for the young men and women He has brought here and for the work He continues to do in their lives in and through this program.

“…until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ.”           Ephesians 4:13
